  • In Front Of God And Everybody

    $9.99

If God wanted April Grace to be kind to her neighbors, He should have made them nicer! Growing up in the country is never easy, but it sure is funny-especially if you happen to have a sister obsessed with being glamorous, a grandma just discovering make-up, hippie friends who never shower, and brand new neighbors from the city who test everyone’s patience. From disastrous dye jobs to forced apologies and elderly date tagalongs, you’ll laugh ’til you cry as you read the Confessions of April Grace! Here are just a couple of April’s thoughts: On her sister, Myra Sue: “How anyone can be that dumb and still be able to eat with a fork is beyond me.” On senior citizen lovebirds: “What if they started smooching right at the table in front of God and everybody?” In spite of all the loony characters in her life, April Grace is able to learn from her parents as they share the love of God-to even the craziest of characters!

Bristol. The very name of the place would often bring a lop-sided grin and a sardonic look from even the most mellow race car driver. The high thirty-six degree banking and the close quarters made this half mile track a wild circus when the Cup boys came into town. Anything could happen and the unexpected was the norm. Tempers as well as engine temperatures ran hot at this place and few if any drivers finished the race without a battle scar or two. That is if they finished. The Orly Mann Racing Team knew that to win here they?d better have their act together and be in top form. The Thunderfoot Ballet Company would have to perform every pitstop flawlessly and give Orly all the track position they possibly could. Paolo and Doug better suck it up and keep their heads in the game. That might not be easy this week. As Bear, co-owner and crewchief would say: trying and doing are two different things. Bear himself, already had a plate full. He was nursing a broken nose and dealing with a major catastrophe at the shop. What else could go wrong? Plenty! The Orly Mann Racing Team faces some serious issues as they get ready to tackle the fastest half mile race track in the world. This is racin? the way it oughta be? He is uniquely aware of the problems that face the world in the 21st century. Many of these problems stem from a lack of understanding about “life issues”, especially abortion, which is the definitive moral issue of our time. Jean Nietubicz has addressed the issue ( for many young people it is still a “question”) of abortion through her novel “WhoWould Know?” As never before, the novel is becoming one of the greatest instruments of the new evangelization. Although most teenagers spend hours in front of the TV each day, many of them love to read in order to find relief from and answers to the problems that confront them each day. “WhoWould Know?” goes directly to the heart, more so than any sermon or classroom lecture could possibly do. The dialogues are real, the pace is just right and the lessons obvious. There should be at least one copy in every high school. Those of us who are engaged in young adult education owe a great debt to Jean Nietubicz. She has helped us proclaim the new evangelization in a way that young people can understand. It is the lesson of the heart. Father Joseph M. Doyle, SSJ President, St. Augustine High School New Orleans, LA

    $21.99

The fact that George MacDonald–a scholar as well as a preacher and writer–once read this fairy tale to his students instead of giving them a lecture says volumes about the man and his beliefs. It also says much about his faith in the power of stories. The Light Princess is a simple enough tale, clearly written for children–a princess at her christening is cursed by a wicked witch with lightness (she floats blissfully about the castle all day long, and gets into all sorts of adventures, as one can easily imagine)–yet it holds a powerful spiritual truth. Gravity, weight, sorrow, suffering–all of this the princess misses, but with all of these she misses love, for what is love without weight, without body? What is love without falling? She discovers this truth, of course, only at the last minute when a faithful prince loves her enough to die for her.
Sometimes it’s not a ponderous lecture–or sermon–that we need in order to experience what incarnation is about.
