  • Aspects Of The Atonement

    $29.99

The Christian understanding of the meaning of the death of Jesus Christ and its relationship to the salvation of sinful humanity is currently the subject of intense debate and criticism. In the first two chapters Howard Marshall discusses the nature of the human plight in relation to the judgment of God and then offers a nuanced defence of the doctrine of the substitutionary death of Jesus Christ for sinners. The third chapter examines the place of the resurrection of Christ as an integral part of the process whereby sinners are put in the right with God. In the final chapter, Marshall argues that in our communication of the gospel today the New Testament concept of reconciliation may be the most comprehensive and apt expression of the lasting significance of the death of Christ. The papers are expanded versions of the 2006 series of Chuen King Lectures given in the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

  • God And The New Atheism

    $21.00

In God and the New Atheism a world expert on science and theology gives clear, concise, and compelling answers to the charges against religion laid out in recent bestselling books by Richard Dawkins (The God Delusion), Sam Harris (The End of Faith), and Christopher Hitchens (God Is not Great). For some, these new atheists appear to say extremely well what they believe to be wrong with religion. But, as John Haught shows, the treatment of religion in these books is riddled with logical inconsistencies, shallow misconceptions, and crude generalizations. Can God really be dismissed as a mere delusion? Is faith really the enemy of reason? And does religion really poison everything? God and the New Atheism offers a much-needed antidote to the extremist claims of scientific fundamentalism. This provocative and accessible little book will enable readers to see through the rhetorical fog of this recent phenomenon and come to a clearer understanding of the issues at stake in this crucial debate.

  • Challenging Richard Dawkins

    $17.00

In his influential book, The God Delusion, currently Amazon’s 8th bestselling title, the atheist Richard Dawkins argues forcefully that the world would be a far happier place without religion, all versions of which are a massive delusion, founded on lies and hypocrisy. Without God, there would have been no Crusades, no wars, no 9/11 or 7/7. People would live together peaceably and common sense would prevail. He’s a likeable character, his writing is sharp and brilliant, and his beliefs have transmuted into widely-believed popular myth. He is outraged by the burqa worn by some Muslim women and accuses religious people of wearing symbolic burqas that restrict their vision of the world, yet this equally forceful book tackles Richard Dawkins for having a restricted view himself, shaped by 19th century Darwinism. His writings do challenge Christians (and people of other faiths) to think more deeply about their beliefs and shake them out of any complacency. Christians need to hear some of the uncomfortable things he says and to know how to answer his alluring claims. Here is a robust and informed challenge to Dawkins’ gospel of atheism.

  • Reasons For Faith

    $30.00

Many Christians want to witness for their faith, but they are afraid they will not be able to answer questions that others may ask of them. First Peter 3:15 reminds believers to always be prepared to “make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.” Norman Geisler and Chad Meister realize the fear of facing questions about the Christian faith. Their book Reasons for Faith gives believers grounded biblical apologetics to help them defend their faith.

By covering the importance of apologetics and then applying apologetics to popular culture and theological issues, these authors give all Christians the tools they need to stand firm in their faith and to be able to share that faith in today’s society.

A compelling and deeply personal account of a young man’s spiritual plunge into a movement called “the River,” which is said to be spreading the kingdom of God through signs and wonders. Warnings of divine retribution keep many adherents in bondage, afraid to speak out or even question those things they are taught and are witness to.

For Kevin Reeves, the determination to rescue his family came to the forefront. Even if the cost was high and even if he had to stand alone, his journey back into the freedom and simplicity of the Gospel of Jesus Christ would be worth the price.

Francis Schaeffer was a well-known, extremely influential apologist and thinker who made his mark defending orthodox truth in the face of strong opposition. He was foremost in the vocation of apologetic ministry, and he was a brilliant man whom God used mightily during the decades of the 1960’s, 70’s, and 80’s.

In Truth With Love, Bryan Follis explores the theology and thinking that fueled the ministry of Francis Schaeffer, from his Reformed position to his understanding of fundamentalism. Follis examines Schaeffer’s apologetic argument and the role of reason in his discussions and writings. The position Francis Schaeffer took against modernism and its applicability in this day of postmodernism are studied as well.

This book is a beneficial resource for any Francis Schaeffer fan and any minister, teacher, or student who appreciates truth and its defense in the face of different kinds of opposition.

  • Little Primer On Humble Apologetics

    $17.00

Always be prepared to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and reverence. (1 Peter 3:15-16) We’ve all felt the tension. An opportunity to speak for Christ comes up, and either we jump in with both barrels blasting or we cower in the corner and say nothing. Is there a better way? Can we learn to speak boldly, yet humbly, about our faith in Christ? Veteran apologist Jim Sire offers salient counsel derived from over fifty years of experience in a vast array of settings. Through a variety of snapshots, both successful and unsuccessful, he helps us understand the nature, value and limits of apologetics, and suggests how to tailor our comments to respect our audience whether large or small, formal or informal. He then outlines five key arguments for the Christian faith and offers responses to five common objections. Finally, for those especially drawn to apologetics, he offers counsel on how to discern a call to apologetic ministry.

  • Why Good Arguments Often Fail

    $27.00

You gave it your best shot. You made the best case you knew how, and your friend still wasn’t persuaded to follow Christ. Why is it that solid, rational arguments for the Christian faith often fail?

For over 50 years James W. Sire has asked himself that question. Sometimes, of course, the arguments themselves just aren’t that good. Sometimes the problem has to do with us and not the arguments. And sometimes the problem lies with the hearers.

With wisdom borne of both formal and informal experience, Sire grapples with these issues and offers practical insight into making a more persuasive case for Christ.

In Breaking the Da Vinci Code: Answers to the Questions Everyone’s Asking, Darrell Bock, Ph.D., responds to the novelist’s claims using central ancient texts and answers the following questions: Who was Mary Magdalene? Was Jesus Married? Would Jesus Being Single be Un-Jewish? Do the So-Called Secret Gnostic Gospels Help Us Understand Jesus? What Is the Remaining Relevance of The Da Vinci Code? Darrell Bock’s research uncovers the origins of these codes by focusing on the 325 years immediately following the birth of Christ, for the claims of The Da Vinci Code rise or fall on the basis of things emerging from this period. Breaking the Da Vinci Code, now available in trade paper, distinguishes fictitious entertainment from historical elements of the Christian faith. • Faith Has Its Reasons

    $50.00

Ever since the apostle Paul addressed the Stoic and Epicurean philosophers in Athens, relating the Christian worldview to a non-Christian world has been a challenge. And despite Peter’s charge to be ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you (1 Peter 3:15), most Christian laypeople have left apologetics-the defense of the faith-to the ecclesiastical pros.

Faith Has Its Reasons is a study of four different models of how apologetics should be done, an assessment of their strengths and weaknesses, and a proposal for integrating the best insights of each. Kenneth Boa and Robert Bowman have assembled a wealth of information about what Christians believe and how to present that faith to an unbelieving world. Remarkable both in its depth of content and ease of accessibility, Faith Has Its Reasons gives Christian laypeople the tools to address such critical questions as:
Why is belief in God rational despite the prevalence of evil in the world?
What facts support the church’s testimony that Jesus rose from the dead?
Can we be certain Christianity is true?
How can our faith in Christ be based on something more secure than our own understanding without descending into an irrational emotionalism?

    $9.50

The subject of more than 70,000 biographies, Jesus retains a significance unmatched in human history. However, despite this ocean of ink, every generation debates that ancient question-who is Jesus? Both The Da Vinci Code and Mel Gibsons controversial film The Passion have created a new round of debate about the carpenter from Nazareth. Who is Jesus? — that single query leads anyone, Christian or otherwise, to a host of other questions about the Gospels, history, miracles, and revelation. Dan Brown’s rather eclectic picture of Jesus in his novel The Da Vinci Code arises out of the forces that have shaped him personally. He is obviously affected by the Christian heritage in America but he has also been influenced by both skeptical philosophies and popular anti-traditional views of Jesus. In keeping with his professed Christian faith, Dan Brown treats Jesus with great respect saying “Jesus Christ was a historical figure of staggering influence, perhaps the most enigmatic and inspirational leader the world has ever seen Sadly, the reverent treatment for Jesus is beside the point when contrasted with Brown’s overall view of Christ and the church. The key assertions that undergird the novel destroy classical Christian convictions about Jesus Christ. Jim Beverley is a well known author and theologian who challenges fact-by-fact and the statements made by Dan Brown and unveils the fact that most of Dan Brown’s theories are heresies of the early centuries that renowned academics have long ago dismissed as bad theology and history.

What’s wrong with Calvinism? Since colonial days, Calvinism has dominated evangelical thought in America. It has been so well established that many Christians simply assumed it to be the truest expression of Christian doctrine. But Calvinism ahs some serious biblical and theological weakness that unsettle laypeople, pastors and scholars alike. God is sovereign. All evangelical Christians–whether Arminians or Calvinists–have no doubt about this fundamental truth. But how does God express his sovereignty? Is God a master puppeteer, pulling our strings? Or has he graciously given his children freedom to respond to his love? In this eminently readable book, Jerry L. Walls and Joseph R. Dongell explore the flaws of Calvinist theology. This book is a must-read for all who struggle.

Why would a fair God condemn people to eternal suffering? Nonbelievers try to use evil to show that God’s goodness and the world’s wickedness can coexist.

Beginning with a discussion of the logical problem of evil, theologian John S. Feinberg analyzes how several theologies do, could, or should handle the problem of evil. He then gives his own response to the problems of evil. Of special note in this revised and expanded edition is a chapter on the doctrine of hell and the benevolence of God in relation to unending torment.

Although some Christians tend to view the faith of the above philosophers as questionable at best and non-existent at worst, Wilkens finds that many of their ideas can enhance Christian faith and yield valuable theological insight. In providing this accessible introduction to some of the key ideas and thinkers in philosophy, Wilkens finds strong grounds for living “the examined life” (playing off the famous quote by Socrates), urging Christians to engage in philosophical reflection, which can strengthen one’s faith and deepen one’s sense of wonder with the world God created.

  • But Dont All Religions Lead To God (Reprinted)

    $13.00

We’ve all heard the rationale: “It doesn’t matter what you believe as long as you’re sincere.” Or “All religions are pretty much the same.” But are they the same? Does it matter which one you follow? In this insightful and compelling book, Michael Green invites readers into a relationship with Jesus Christ, the divine revelation and only pathway to the one true God. In a conversational style geared toward nonbelievers, Green compares Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, and other religions to help spiritual seekers navigate the multi-faith maze. “But Don’t All Religions Lead to God?” is an ideal reference and evangelism tool for churches and individual Christians as well. It offers scriptural references, looks at how divergent religious traditions view salvation and eternity, and answers difficult questions such as “What about people who have never heard of Jesus?” and “How should Christians regard other religions?” In the midst of our pluralistic and tolerant culture, here is an important and convincing argument for faith in Jesus-the only great teacher whose death and resurrection provided grace, forgiveness, and an eternity in the presence of God.

  • Wedge Of Truth

    $26.00

    IVP Print On Demand Title

Science is the supreme authority in our culture.

If there is a dispute, science arbitrates it. If a law is to be passed, science must ratify it. If truth is to be taught, science must approve it. And when science is ignored, stroms of protest are heard in the media, in the university–even in local coffee shops.

Yet a society ruled by science (and the naturalistic philosophy that undergirds much of it) faces major problems. Science speaks so authoritatively in our culture that many are tempted to use its clout to back claims that go beyond the available evidence. How can we spot when such ideological slight of hand has taken place?

More important, while we may learn a great deal from science, it does not offer us unlimited knowledge. In fact, most scientists readily acknowledge that science cannot provide answers to questions of ultimate purpose or meaning. So to what authority will we turn for these?

The deficiencies in science and the philosophy (naturalism) that undergirds it call for a cognitive revolution–a fundamental change in our thinking habits. And it all begins with a wedge of truth.

This wedge of truth does not “wedge out” a necessary foundation of rational thought. But it does “wedge in” the much-needed acknowledgment that reason encompasses more than mere scientific investigation. Phillip E. Johnson argues compellingly for an understanding of reason that brings scientific certainty back into relational balance with philosophical inquiry and religious faith.

Applying his wedge of truth, Johnson analyzes the latest debates between science and religion played out in our media, our universities and society-at-large. He looks to thinkers such as Newbigin, Polanyi and Pascal to lay a foundation for our seeing the universe in a totally different way. And from that base he then considers the educational programs and research agendas that should be undertaken–and have already begun in some earnest–during this new century.

In the end, Johnson prophetically concludes that the walls of naturalism will fall and that the Christian gospel must play a vital role in building a new foundation fro thinking–not just about science and religion but about everyhting that gives human life hopeand meaning.
