Has God abandoned the Jewish people?

In ABANDONED, we meet the modern, often secular face of contemporary Jewry. Telchin asks: What do today’s Jews believe about God and the Bible? What keeps them from considering the Gospel? Then he addresses the big lie: “You cannot be Jewish and believe in Jesus.” Finally, he guides us to the heart of the matter: why the Jewish people really need Jesus and how we can develop a faithful, loving witness to them.

ABANDONED is an invaluable guide to help us share God’s love with the people who are always on His heart.

John Cobb argues that the very term “mainline” is no a misnomer and that “oldline” more aptly describes this formerly robust body. Should this church opt to survive at the margin? If it attempts to do so, Cobb contends, what has been valuable and relevant for generations will disappear. Honest and provocative, this book will both disturb and inspire all those who care about the fate of the mainline church.

  • Doctrine Of Humanity

    $35.99

At the end of the twentieth century the forces of race, gender, ethnicity, culture, social status, life-style and sexual preference threaten to disassemble any notion of universal “human nature” or “human condition.” In light of this historical moment, the Christian doctrine of human nature is ripe for rethinking and reformulation.

Charles Sherlock sees this theological task as demanding a “double focus.” To reflect on the subject of human nature, he says, is like “moving around the different areas of an ellipse with two focal points”: humans as made in the image of God and the particular realities of human existence. Both must be brought into sharper, more detailed focus in our quest to understand human nature.

The result of Sherlock’s “double focus” is The Doctrine of Humanity, a new volume in IVP’s Contours of Christian Theology. Sherlock notably engages the communal dimension of humanity in its social, creational and cultural aspects before examining the human person as individual, as male and female, and as whole being. He offers a timely and engaging look at what it means to be human on the continuum between our creation in the divine image and our recreation in the image of Christ.

  • Holy Spirit : Contours Of Christian Theology

    $35.99

The Holy Spirit, once forgotten, has been “rediscovered” in the twentieth century – or has he? Sinclair Ferguson believes we should rephrase this common assertion: “While his work has been recognized, the Spirit himself remains to many Christians an anonymous, faceless aspect of the divine being.” In order to redress this balance, Ferguson seeks to recover the who of the Spirit as much as the what and how. Ferguson’s study is rooted and driven by the scriptural story of the Spirit in creation and redemption.

  • Streams In The Desert Updated Edition

    $15.99

In a barren wilderness, L. B. Cowman long ago discovered a fountain that sustained her, and she shared it with the world, Streams in the Desert — her collection of prayerful meditations, Christian writings, and God’s written promises–has become one of the most dearly loved, best-selling devotionals of all time since its first publication in 1925. Filled with insight into the richness of God’s provision and the purpose of His plan, this enduring classic has encouraged and inspired generations of Christians. I heard the flow of hidden springs; before me palms rose green and fair; The birds were singing; all the air was filled and stirred with angels’ wings. Now James Reimann, editor of the highly acclaimed updated edition of My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers, again brings us the wisdom of the past in the language of today, by introducing this updated edition of Streams in the Desert. With fresh, contemporary wording and precise NIV text, the timeless message of the original flows unhindered through these pages, lending guidance and hope to a new generation of believers. We never know where God has hidden His streams. We see a large stone and have no idea that it covers the source of a spring. We see a rocky areas and never imagine that it is hiding a fountain. God leads me into hard and difficult places, and it is there I realize I am where eternal streams abide. Day by day, Streams in the Desert will lead you from life’s dry desolate places to the waters of the River of Life — and beyond, to their very Source.

  • Life And Thought Of Kanzo Uchimura 1861-1930 A Print On Demand Title

    $25.99

While staying in the United States in 1884 at the age of 23, Kanzo Uchimura (1861-1930) felt a sense of religious calling that led him to devote the rest of his life to Christian mission in Japan. His subsequent life and work earned him recognition as one of the most important Japanese thinkers, essayists, and theologians of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Uchimura claimed that Japan adopted Western civilization at the reopening of the country in the late nineteenth century but did not adopt Christianity itself – the very cause, spirit, and life of Western civilization. This was the origin of all the difficulties Japan had been experiencing. There is no question that Uchimura believed Christianity would save Japan and the Japanese; the real question was “What kind of Christianity?”

In his view Christian faith entails a radical dependence on the gospel; baptism, communion, and the other sacraments are not necessary. He also believed that God’s truth can be revealed directly to each individual, so that an intermediary between God and people, such as a minister, priest, or pope, is not required. This argument led Uchimura to start the Mukyokai-shugi (Non-churchism), a denial of the institutional church. Miura here explores in depth this theme in Uchimura’s thought as well as Uchimura’s particular vision of Japan’s mission to the world.

This study not only offers Western readers new information about Kanzo Uchimura and the Japanese Non- church Movement; it also provides important insights into the way Christianity can be indigenized in a new culture, such as that of modern Japan.

  • Diary Of A Young Girl

    $8.99

Discovered in the attic in which she spent the last years of her life, Anne Frank’s remarkable diary has since become a world classic-a powerful reminder of the horrors of war and an eloquent testament to the human spirit.

In 1942, with Nazis occupying Holland, a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl and her family fled their home in Amsterdam and went into hiding. For the next two years, until their whereabouts were betrayed to the Gestapo, they and another family lived cloistered in the “Secret Annex” of an old office building. Cut off from the outside world, they faced hunger, boredom, the constant cruelties of living in confined quarters, and the ever-present threat of discovery and death. In her diary Anne Frank recorded vivid impressions of her experiences during this period. By turns thoughtful, moving, and amusing, her account offers a fascinating commentary on human courage and frailty and a compelling self-portrait of a sensitive and spirited young woman whose promise was tragically cut short.

  • Images Of The Church In Missions

    $19.99

The Bible shows that the very existence of the church is grounded in God’s saving mission. The church is a visible demonstration of the reign of God, his “experimental plot” in the midst of history, pointing toward the restoration of all things.

Driver offers studies of 12 biblical images for understanding the church. They steer us toward a church more in harmony with God’s missionary purpose for his people, and toward a mission solidly based in the biblical vision of peoplehood. These images communicate with power and clarity, reflecting the sense of identity in early Christian communities. In our own time, such images can inspire the church to live up to its reason for being. The images the church uses to understand itself will largely determine what the church will become.

Driver explores images of pilgrimage, of God’s new order, of peoplehood, and of transformation. By its calling, the church must be in mission. The church needs the vital sense of identity inspired by these biblical images to serve God’s saving purpose for all creation.

Is John’s Gospel antisemitic? In John 8:44 Jesus tells the Jews, ‘You are of your father the Devil’, a charge used throughout the centuries by antisemites to fuel hatred of the Jews. And it is no one-off statement: throughout the Gospel, ‘the Jews’ appear as Jesus’ sharpest opponents, ultimately seeking his execution. Who then are ‘the Jews’ in John’s Gospel? Defending John against the charge of antisemitism, Motyer argues that, far from demonising the Jews, the Gospel seeks to present Jesus as ‘Good News for Jews’ in a late first century setting.

In this book, the author creates a practical theology by working at the intersection of religious understandings in the African American community and its most pressing problems. He skillfully probes to their deepest cultural and religious roots. There the moral distortions of racism, poverty, shame, disease, dysfuntional families, and even problematic elements in religious life can be excised so that new, more helpful ideas of grace, salvation, and community can flourish.

  • Between Noon And Three A Print On Demand Title

    $28.99

Picture a college town in the mid- 1970s. An English professor who has become an expert in extramarital dalliances is smitten by one of his graduate students. They meet for lunch around noon, and before three they make declarations of love. Is it possible that their subsequent affair could ultimately teach us something about true forgiveness and the radical meaning of grace? Only Robert Farrar Capon would have the audacity – and the authorial skill – to fashion such a tale.

It has taken well over a decade for Between Noon and Three to appear in this, its original form. First published under two separate titles with significant parts excised and an entire section recast, the real Between Noon and Three is actually a trilogy of intertwined tales, each of which exhibits Capon’s persistent insistence on the outrageous nature of grace. The original manuscript is here printed in full, including a new introduction by Capon on the work’s unusual history.

Reading sometimes like a provocative novel, sometimes like a theological wrangle between writer and reader, Between Noon and Three defies categorization. Capon sums up the book this way: “Those who read it as a novel are doomed to disappointment: at every turn, the story line entangles itself in theological ropework. On the other hand, those who prefer their theology straight up – no ice, no olives, no twists – will recoil at the plethora of oddments I serve with it, not to mention my penchant for mixing purple prose with low comedy. I always work two sides of the street at once, running from store to store, picking up what strikes my fancy. If you can stand the switching back and forth, it makes for a diverting experience.”

Diverting, disconcerting, engaging, enlightening – it’s pure Capon.
