    • Hidden Spring : The Spiritual Dimension Of Therapy (Reprinted)

      $17.00

Increasingly pastoral counselors–along with psychotherapists and social workers–feel the need to integrate spirituality into their therapy. Thomas Hart’s pioneering and lucid book, here reissued and updated, equips them to do so. The problems that people bring to counseling always have a spiritual dimension, and this hidden spring can also figure in their healing. Hart, a therapist and theologian, shows how much richer therapy is when it calls attention to spirituality in addressing human struggles. He argues that psychology and spirituality unite in a common goal of healing, with growth, and fulfillment; while spirituality offers a larger, more ultimate framework of value, meaning, and power. Especially for those whose training tended toward the straightforwardly psychological, this book offers a manual for a richer, more meaningful counseling. Initial chapters discuss the presence of God in ordinary life, the relationship of the two disciplines, and the contours of healthy spirituality. Six concrete and illuminating case studies demonstrate how to integrate the two in practice.

    • Healing A Broken World

      $23.00

While spirituality is still thought to be primarily a personal quest for holiness and religious experience, it might be thought mere narcissim in an era of widespread need. Moe-Lobeda shows how the advent of globalization places a new horizon on the spiritual quest but, at the same time, has caused an enervation of people’s sense of moral agency. What can I, one person, do to affect such a massive and systemic shift? Far from being a flight from the world, she argues, the classic Christian contemplative tradition can ignite critical vision and creative resistance to the seemingly inevitable march of globalization.

    • Hometown Legend

      $21.99

The coauthor of the blockbuster Left Behind series inks the appealing, happily-ever-after Hometown Legend, about a small town in severe financial straits and its former championship football team, written in a made-for-the-movies style that will earn author Jerry Jenkins some new fans. There are some likable characters in this yarn. Lonely widower Cal Sawyer is juggling several balls at once: raising his teenage daughter Rachel, helping coach the down-at-the-heels Athens City High football team, and trying to keep the American Leather Football Company from going belly up. He doesn’t count on the impact Elvis Presley Jackson will have on the football season–and on his daughter. Bev Raschke, Sawyer’s single, 40-something assistant, has her eye on him, but as Sawyer says, “She’s got two cats, and that’s about all I need to know about a woman.” Romance is inevitable. As the novel unfolds, mostly told in Sawyer’s rambling, Southern drawl, we see trouble brewing in his personal life, on the football team, and with the unfolding of Elvis’s past. But never fear–there’s a happy ending in sight. No loose ends are left dangling, and there’s a heartwarming, feel-good wrap-up with a bit of a spin that will satisfy Left Behind aficionados who enjoy a predestined finish to their leisure reading.

    • Graven Ideologies

      $35.99

      IVP Print On Demand Title

What do the philosophers Friedrich Nietzsche, Jacques Derrida and Jean-Luc Marion have in common with Christianity? Surprisingly, they are all concerned about idolatry, about the tendency we have to create God in our own image and about what we can do about it. Can we faithfully speak of God at all without interposing ourselves? If so, how? Bruce Ellis Benson explores this common concern by clearly laying out the thought of each of these postmodern thinkers against the background of modern philosophers such as Descartes, Locke and Hume and in light of the rise of phenomenology as developed by Husserl and Heidegger. All these thinkers he brings into conversation with a full range of biblical teaching. The result is an illuminating survey of some key postmodern thinkers and profound insight into the nature of conceptual idolatry. Benson also exposes some of the limitations inherent in postmodern attempts to provide a purely philosophical solution to the problem of ideological idolatry. Ultimately, he argues, there is a need for something greater than human philosophy, religion or theology–namely, the biblical revelation of God in Jesus Christ.

    • Ancient And Postmodern Christianity

      $35.99

      IVP Print On Demand Title

The consensual roots of Christianity found in the common understanding of the faith among the early church fathers is the foundation on which the church can and should build in the twenty-first century. Edited by Kennth Tanner and Christopher A. Hall, the eighteen essays found in this volume span theological and ecclesiastical perspectives that emphasize what the various Christian traditions hold in common. This shared heritage is applied to a wide range of topics–from worship and theology to ethics and history and more–that point the way for the people of God in the decades ahead. Ancient & Postmodern Christianity is created in honor of Thomas C. Oden, who has done much in recent decades to promote these ideas with such signal publications as After Modernity . . . What? and the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture, which was launched under his editorial direction. Contributing scholars include Richard John Neuhaus, Alan Padgett, J. I. Packer, Wolfhart Pannenberg, Carl Braaten, Stanley Grenz, Bradley Nassif, Thomas Howard and more. Here is a volume that will set a course needed for succeeding generations to restore and renew a living orthodoxy.

    • Men And Their Religion

      $37.95

Are men more or less religious than women, and in what way? In Men and Their Religion, Donald Capps brings to life men’s engagement with religion and provides insights into the rapid rise of men’s religious organizations such as Promise Keepers.
Capps says that men are just as religious as women, but in a different way. The religiousness of men is rooted in a deep sense of melancholy, a sense originating when they are small boys separating emotionally from their mothers. Fathers also play a part in the religious development of men. The Judaeo-Christian tradition, Capps argues, requires the sacrifice of father-son love because the Father God is a jealous God, allowing no rivals. So for boys, the hoped-for attachment to their fathers never happens.

As a result of this loss, the religion of men takes three forms: the religion of honor, the religion of hope, and the religion of humor. Capps uses two case studies to show the ways in which men with religious melancholia may develop a compensating religion of honor on one hand and a religion of hope on the other. Finally, religious melancholy can be countered through humor, and Capps concludes that if men had their way there would be more humor in religion and humor would be recognized as religious.

These words can fence in your life. The demands on your time and energy too often leave you feeling depleted. How do you foster spiritual growth amid the realites of life today?

Confession, solitude, service, studying the Word, praying, simplifying. Keri Wyatt Kent introduces these disciplines–the practices that foster a flourishing, fruitful garden within your soul. In The Garden of the Soul Kent explores how common disciplines of gardening parallel these necessary habits of spiritual life.

As you work with God to create the right conditions in the soil of your soul, growth will follow. And the harvest will be glorious.

    • How To Keep The Pastor You Love

      $25.99

      IVP Print On Demand Title

While Paul urges the church to “overwhelm them with appreciation and love” (1 Thessalonians 5:13), research and anecdotal evidence shows that most pastors experience little support when they need it the most. The result? One long-time pastor reports that he thinks about quitting the ministry as often as twice a week, and an estimated twenty-five percent of all ministers relocate every year.

In Jane Rubietta explores the “flip side” of pastoral care–caring for your pastor. She breaks down the largely unexamined myth of the superhuman pastor. And she provides everything you need to know to build healthy, caring, mutually sustaining relationships among your church and its leaders.

Ministers and their families can profitably read the book along with lay leaders to become more aware of where they need the help and encouragement of their congregations. Questions at the end of each chapter guide pastoral families in reflecting on their own experiences–both positive and negative–of life in the church.
