Job : Poetry

These are popular messages, prepared originally for a radio audience. They should not be considered a commentary on the entire Bible in any sense of that term. These messages are devoid of any attempt to present a theological or technical commentary on the Bible. Behind these messages is a great deal of research and study in order to interpret the Bible from a popular rather than from a scholarly (and too-often boring) viewpoint. -
Ruth : Surely There Is A Future
$17.99Add to cartThis is a print on demand book.
Series: International Theological Commentary
The book of Ruth, set in the period of the judges, is a beautiful story of the love, covenant loyalty, and daring initiative of two impoverished widows. Together with a generous open-hearted man, they demonstrate the truth of Proverbs 23:18 that applies to individuals, families, communities, and nations: “Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.” In this excellent commentary E. John Hamlin approaches the book of Ruth as literature, as history, as part of the canon, and as truth-telling story.

1-2 Peter And Jude
$34.00Add to cartFred Craddock examines the letters of 1 and 2 Peter and Jude. Of each epistle he asks, What kind of literature is it? Who wrote the letter? To whom was the letter written? And for what purpose was the letter written? Craddock’s answers let us draw from these often undervalued epistles on awareness of what is involved in living a Christian life in this world. We also see the similarities and differences in how Christ is portrayed in these epistles as opposed to the depiction found in other New Testament writings.

Johns Wisdom : A Commentary On The Fourth Gospel
$58.00Add to cartJesus as depicted in the Fourth Gospel is remarkably dissimilar to the Jesus found in the Synoptic Gospels. In this book, Ben Witherington III places the Gospel of John within its proper literary, historical, social, and theological contexts, especially those dealing with the wisdom traditions of Hellenistic Judaism. What emerges is a compelling argument that the Gospel of John has an agenda for mission in addition to concerns for discipleship and community life.

Luke
$40.00Add to cartThe Gospel of Luke is arguably the most recognizable and beloved of the gospel writings. It contains familiar stories such as the birth of Christ and the parables of the good Samaritan and the prodigal son. Its messages about inclusivity and economic justice continue to empower many in their struggles for liberation. Luke is also noted for the prominence of women in its narrative. The general familiarity with Luke, however, may impede a true sense of what this Gospel is about as a whole. Thus, New Testament scholar Sharon H. Ringe offers readers a thorough introduction to and a critical reading of Luke. Readers will gain a renewed understanding of this Gospel in light of its whole message.

Pentateuch As Narrative
$34.99Add to cartMost scholars studying the first five books of the Bible either attempt to dissect it into various pre-pentateuchal documents or, at the very least, analyze Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy as separate, self-contained documents. The Pentateuch As Narrative focuses on the narrative and literary continuity of the Pentateuch as a whole. It seeks to disclose how the original Jewish readers may have viewed this multivolume work of Moses. Its central thesis is that the Pentateuch was written from the perspective of one who had lived under the Law of the Covenant established at Mount Sinai and had seen its failure to produce genuine trust in the Lord God of Israel. In this context, the Pentateuch pointed the reader forward to the hope of the New Covenant, based on divine faithfulness. Throughout the commentary Dr. Sailhamer pays close attention to and interacts with a wide range of classical and contemporary literature on the Pentateuch, written by Jews, Catholics, and Protestants.

Conflict And Community In Corinth
$46.99Add to cartThis unprecedented commentary by Ben Witherington III sheds fresh light on the context and content of Paul’s message by analyzing 1 and 2 Corinthians in terms of Greco Roman Rhetoric– the standard means of persuasion in his day– and ancient social conditions and customs. This innovative approach, combined with commentary that discusses the text according to its rhetorical units rather than the usual verse-by-verse procedure, offers a new way of looking at Paul’s relationship with his Corinthian converts.

Commentary On Romans A Print On Demand Title
$43.99Add to cartThis commentary on Paul’s letter to the Romans summarizes and completes Ernst Kasemann’s lifelong study of Paul’s theology and of this epistle in particular. As is common in his writings, Kasemann in this commentary has gone his own, frequently provocative way. He has emphasized theological rather than historical questions; as a result, this commentary divides Romans into sections according to what Kasemann sees as the key theological concept of the letter – the righteousness of God. That Kasemann has, however, considered seriously the historical as well as theological questions in the extensive literature on Romans is evident in the numerous references in the text and in the bibliographies provided for the major and minor subdivisions of the sections.
This commentary has been translated from the German by Geoffrey W. Bromiley, who has translated, among other works, Kittel’s Theological Dictionary of the New Testament. Long paragraphs in the original have been divided to provide easier reading, and the references have been converted to English- translation equivalents wherever possible. In addition, this translation incorporates changes that Kasemann made in the German original for the 4th edition.

Apocalypse : A Reading Of The Revelation Of John
$30.00Add to cartIn this concise and clearly written commentary, Charles H. Talbert brings to mainline Christians a fresh reading of the book of Revelation, demonstrating that it is not only accessible but relevant for the modern-day Christian. According to Talbert, the primary causes of the marginalized status of the book of Revelation by mainline Christians are threefold–the apparent inaccessibility of its meaning, the seeming impossibility of its pastoral application, and its demonstrated susceptibility to abuse. Talbert ably demonstrates that the book of Revelation was written to help the early Christians avoid assimilation into the larger pagan culture. Talbert also gives full attention to the literature of the Greco-Roman, early Christian, and early Jewish worlds as he examines the more mystical components of the narrative.
