History

  • From Sea To Shining Sea For Young Readers (Reprinted)

    $18.00

From the very beginning it would seem that God had a plan for America. From its discovery by Europeans to its settlement, from the Revolution to Manifest Destiny, from the stirrings of civil unrest to civil war, America was on a path. In our pluralistic world, when textbooks are being rewritten in ways that obscure the Judeo-Christian beginnings of our country, the books in the Discovering God’s Plan for America series help ground young readers in a distinctly evangelical way of understanding early American history.

As young readers look at their nation’s development from God’s point of view, they will begin to have a clearer idea of how much we owe to a very few–and how much is still at stake. These engaging books bring history alive in a way that will inspire young people to do their important part in shaping this nation into the future.

  • Women And Redemption (Expanded)

    $44.00

Rosemary Radford Ruether’s authoritative, award-winning critique of women’s unequal standing in the church, which explored the complex history of redemption in evaluating conflict over the fundamental meaning of the Christian gospel for gender relations, is now in an updated and expanded edition. Ruether highlights women theologians’ work to challenge the patriarchal paradigm of historical theology and to present redemption linked to the liberation of women. Ruether turns her attention to the situation of women globally and how the growing plurality of women’s voices from multicultural and multireligious contexts articulates feminist liberation theology today.

  • Memoirs In Exile

    $39.00

“John Tietjen’s close account of the conflict within a Christian body moves with the skill, the drama, and the characterization of a novel. But there is no shred of fiction here. The author stood at the center of the conflict. His observations of the events (both broadly public and closeted in private) that altered the face-politic of Lutheranism in this country are absolutely accurate. Here is the selfish expression of faith, as well as the dangers of the right hand of power within churches. Here, too, is the sweetness of human community-even while individual people of faith must stand in their decisions ultimately alone. Tietjen has written a memoriam and a history and a jubilate and a confession. Excellent!”
    -Walter Wangerin Jr.

“John Tietjen tells the unpleasant story of crisis and conflict in the church. It is a story that needs to be told, and he tells it in a way that people will find both gripping and uplifting. This is his personal account, done with the precision and documentation of a professional historian, but his writing also produces a narration of many key events and a strikingly human portrayal of the people on both sides of the conflict. In John Tietjen’s hands, this story of conflict and crisis brings us back to the God who produces order out of chaos and blessing out of the suffering of God’s people.”
    -Jeanette H. Bauermeister

  • Change To Chains Volume 1

    $20.00

How did past civilizations rise and fall? How rare is America’s experiment with a republic? With every crisis, is power being taken away from “the people” and transfered to the central government. Does history give us a clue as to where all this is all headed? George Washington warned in his Farewell Address, 1796: “Disorders and miseries…gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an Individual…[who] turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of Public…and thus to create, whatever the form of government, a real despotism.” Ronald Reagan stated at St. John’s University, NY, March 28, 1985: “Government that is big enough to give you everything you want is more likely to simply take everything you’ve got.” Woodrow Wilson warned in New York, 1912: “The history of Liberty is a history of limitations of governmental power, not the increase of it. When we resist, therefore, the concentration of power, we are resisting the powers of death, because concentration of power is what always precedes the destruction of human liberties.” In the nearly 6,000 years of recorded human history, power, like gravity, seems to inevitably concentrate into the hands of one individual, sometimes called pharoah, caesar, czar, kaiser, king, emperor, monarch, sultan, president or communist dictator. No matter what the autocratic leader’s particular title is, the default setting for human government throughout history has most often been monarchy. When power is concentrated, the State is supreme. When power is separated, the individual is supreme. America’s founders had a unique window of opportunity in the long train of world history, to maximize the freedom and opportunity of the individual. Ronald Reagan stated in 1961: “In this country of ours took place the greatest revolution that has ever taken place in the world’s history…Every other revolution simply exchanged one set of rulers for another.” Is past behavior the best indicator of future performance? What can we expect? Find out as world history comes alive from a whole new perspective in “Change to Chains – the 6000 year quest for control – Volume I: Rise of the Republic.”

  • European Mennonite Voluntary Service 1948-1972

    $14.95

Europe at the end of World War II was badly in need of constructive idealism. This book tells the story of one key effort to provide it, the Mennonite-related work camp movement. Hitler’s Nazi regime left the European people wounded, traumatized, and demoralized. The victims of this destruction thus were receptive for any indication of hope to fill the vacuum. This is the context of the eagerness of the young people to join in the work camp movement.

Thus by 1950, for example, when the Mennonite Central Committee international voluntary service office in Frankfurt announced its summer program, a flood of applications arrived. Letters appealing for help in needy projects which had resulted from the damage of war poured in as well.

The result, according to one camper quoted in the book: “We had torn down brick walls, cleaned the brick, hauled out the rubble, leveled the floors, and cemented. As we left for home we could see our memorial, accomplished for the good of the school [and] bring the nations of the world together into a more complete understanding.”

European Mennonite Voluntary Service includes careful yet accessible analysis and reflection; extended personal accounts of what the EMVS experience meant for those who served; photos, notes, and index.

  • Mission After Christendom

    $37.00

In 1910 Protestant missionaries from around the world gathered to explore the role of Christian missions in the twentieth century. In this collection, leading missiologists use the one hundred year anniversary of the Edinburgh conference as an occasion to reflect on the practice of Christian mission in today’s context: a context marked by globalization, migration, ecological crisis, and religiously motivated violence. The contributors explore the meaning of Christian mission, the contemporary context for mission work, and new forms in which the church has engaged–and should engage–in its missionary task. From these essays, a vision of twenty first-century mission begins to emerge–one that is aware of issues of race, gender, border spaces, migration, and ecology. This renewed vision gives strength to the future of shared Christian ministry across nations and traditions.

  • Reagans Revolution : The Untold Story Of The Campaign That Started It All

    $22.99

Today’s political scene looks nothing like it did thirty years ago, and that is due mostly to Reagan’s monumental reshaping of the Republican party. What few people realize, however, is that Reagan’s revolution did not begin when he took office in 1980, but in his failed presidential challenge to Gerald Ford in 1975-1976. This is the remarkable story of that historic campaign-one that, as Reagan put it, turned a party of “pale pastels” into a national party of “bold colors.” Featuring interviews with a myriad of politicos, journalists, insiders, and observers, Craig Shirley relays intriguing, never-before-told anecdotes about Reagan, his staff, the campaign, the media, and the national parties and shows how Reagan, instead of following the lead of the ever-weakening Republican party, brought the party to him and almost single-handedly revived it.

Sometimes the heroes of history are truly worthy of the golden reputations they carry.

King Alfred united Anglo-Saxon England against a Viking invasion, led the English into battle against the Danish hordes, created a renaissance of literature and the arts, reformed the legal system, and set the stage for a revival of Christian worship. But that’s not what made him great. Ben Merkle unravels the tale of how a great man came to power during one of the most difficult periods in English history, how he led his nation through them, and how he laid the groundwork for England’s coming triumphs on the global stage.

    $13.99

Originally published in 1881, Our Brother in Black: His Freedom and His Future is Atticus G. Haygood’s concise and insightful study of race relations in the post-bellum American South. At the core of Haygood’s writing is an unflinching belief that God’s hand was in the events expanding African slavery to American shores, the cataclysmic Civil War, and the ill-fated, short-circuited efforts to usher former slaves across the threshold to full citizenship. Central, too, is Haygood’s resolution that all men of faith, regardless of skin color, can share common rights and responsibilities within a single free society, working for its progress and defending its liberties. • Toxic Spirituality : Four Enduring Temptations Of Christian Faith

    $22.00

G.K. Chesterton long ago observed that real Christianity had in some ways never really been tried. Eric Gritsch, a renowned historian, a pastor, and a theologian for half a century, offers Christianity a reality check, exposing four historical movements that have weakened and abused the core of the Christian tradition. These movements represent wayward views on the relationships between Christians and Jews; between the authority of Scripture and tradition; between the church and worldy power; and between faith and morals. Readers encounter these wayward traditions in their historical trajectories, in the ways these traditions have diminished the gospel, and in the ways they have been impediments of an effective contemporary Christian witness. They represent the enduring temptation to be “like God” (Gen. 3:5), a temptation marked by a zeal for secure, unchanging, and ultimate Christian life on Earth. The author confronts these wayward traditions with the enduring challenge of faithful, cruciform, penultimate discipleship in the time between the first and second advent of Christ.

  • Jesus And The Feminists

    $25.00

This resource provides a detailed survey and critique of various feminist interpretations of Jesus and offers a biblical view of men and women in the church and home.

The feminist movement has affected every aspect of political and social America, and Christians are becoming increasingly aware of how this movement has impacted the church.

The feminist movement has changed the way evangelicals view not only themselves, but also the very Word of God.

Jesus and the Feminists begins by offering a brief survey of the feminist movement, revealing the radical misunderstanding of Jesus that has resulted from this movement. Kostenberger then critiques the relevant works of well-known feminist scholars and the ways they interpret certain passages of Scripture related to Jesus and his approach to women.

This practical resource points the way to a better understanding of the biblical message regarding Jesus’ stance toward women and offers both men and women a biblical view of their roles in the church and the home.

  • City Upon A Hill

    $16.99

The Puritan founder John Winthrop preached about “a city upon a hill,” Abraham Lincoln’s two greatest speeches have been called “sermons on the mount,” and Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” oration is nothing if not a sermon. Not only can the history of the United States be told through its reflection in the landmark sermons preached from its pulpits and in front of its memorials, but in fact it was often the sermon that inspired and helped define American history.

Between the colonization of America and the terrorist attacks of September 2001, the sermon has both shaped America’s self-understanding and reflected both sides of its most important social, political, military, and philosophical debates. That is the story of A City Upon a Hill: How the Sermon Made America, a narrative history of events, people, and ideas, showing us at our best–and sometimes at our worst. The book will cover American history from 1606 to 2001, building links between the pulpit and politics, between preachers and presidents, between sermons and historical events.

A City Upon a Hill will elaborate on two unifying themes. The first and central theme will be the idea of America as a “chosen” nation (raised as recently as the second inaugural of President Bush in 2005). A second underlying theme will be the perennial debate in America between liberty and order. In addition, the role of the sermon as the first mass media will be examined.

As a narrative history, A City Upon a Hillwill ask about, for example, the role of religion in the American Revolution and slavery, whether religious affiliation has grown or declined in various centuries, and how much ideas and beliefs affected policies, andvice versa. The sermon offers a uniquely compelling vehicle to tell the national story. The sermon shows that what America says and believes can often be better than what it does, serving as a national conscience amid centuries of triumphalist claims. The sermon gathers together four centuries of disparate strands and provides a solid grip for defining a nation.

  • Prayer In America

    $27.00

A stirring chronicle of the spiritual life of a nation, Prayer in America shows how the faith of Americans-from the founding fathers to corporate tycoons, from composers to social reformers, from generals to slaves-was an essential ingredient in the formation of American culture, character, commerce, and creed.

Prayer in America brings together the country’s hymns, patriotic anthems, arts, and literature as a framework for telling the story of the innermost thoughts of the people who have shaped the United States we know today. Beginning with Native Americans, Prayer in America traces the prayer lives of Quakers and Shakers, Sikhs and Muslims, Catholics and Jews, from their earliest days in the United States through the aftermath of 9/11, and the 2004 presidential election. It probes the approach to prayer by such diverse individuals as Benjamin Franklin, Elvis Presley, Frank Lloyd Wright, J. C. Penney, P. T. Barnum, Jackie Robinson, and Christopher Columbus. It includes every president of the United States as well as America’s clergy, immigrants, industrialists, miners, sports heroes, and scientists.

Prayer in America shows that without prayer, the political, cultural, social, and even economic and military history of the United States would be vastly different from what it is today. It engages in a thoughtful, timely examination of the modern debate over public prayer and how the current approach to prayer bears deep roots in the philosophies of the country’s founding fathers, a subject which remains distinct from the debate over church and state.

The Rabbis of classical Judaism, in the first six centuries of the Common Era, commented on the teachings of ancient Israel’s prophets and shaped, as much as they were shaped by, prophecy. They commented on much of the Scriptural heritage and they made it their own. This collection of the Rabbinic comments on biblical books makes easily accessible the Rabbinic reading of the prophetic heritage and opens the way to the study of how normative Judaism responded to the challenge of the prophetic writings.

  • What Jesus Meant

    $24.00

In what are billed as culture wars, people on the political right and the political left cite Jesus as endorsing their views. Garry Wills argues that Jesus subscribed to no political program. He was far more radical than that. In a fresh reading of the Gospels, Wills explores the meaning of the reign of heaven Jesus not only promised for the future but brought with him into this life. This is a book that will challenge the assumptions of almost everyone who brings religion into politics-Christian socialists as well as biblical theocrats.

The Army continues to exhibit a tension between its theology, which supports equality of status, and its military structure, which works against equality, and both schools of thought flourish within its ranks.

This book is a study of discernment in the life and thought of the fourth- and fifth-century Egyptian desert fathers.
