    • On Wings Of Devotion

      $22.35

All of England thinks Phillip Camden a monster–a man who deliberately caused the deaths of his squadron. But as nurse Arabelle Denler watches the so-dubbed “Black Heart” every day, she sees something far different: a hurting man desperate for mercy. And when their paths twist together and he declares himself her new protector, she realizes she has her own role to play in his healing.

Phillip Camden would have preferred to die that day with his squadron rather than be recruited to the Admiralty’s codebreaking division. The threats he receives daily are no great surprise and, in his opinion, well deserved. What comes as a shock is the reborn desire to truly live that Arabelle inspires in him.

But when an old acquaintance shows up and seems set on using him in a plot that has the codebreakers of Room 40 in a frenzy, new affections are put to the test.

    • Know What Youre FOR Study Guide (Student/Study Guide)

      $12.99

What do you want to be know FOR? This is a great question for any leader of an organization to ask, whether it is a church, a business, or a nonprofit. After all, when an organization is able to close the gap between what they are known for and what they want to be known for, it results in unprecedented growth.

However, as Jeff Henderson reveals in the Know What You’re FOR small-group study (DVD/video downloads sold separately), this is also a great question for believers in Christ to ask themselves. All too often today, people in the world know more about what those in the church are AGAINST than what they are FOR. Instead of perceiving believers as being people of grace, love, and acceptance, they see them as angry, pessimistic, and intolerant. Certainly, as believers in Christ, we are called to state the truth about the condition of the world and its problem with sin . . . but the Bible is clear we are also to love others, extend grace, and get along as much as possible.

Back in the days of the early church, the believers also struggled with how to “draw the line” when it came to accepting the sinner but not the sin. The Christians even held a council in Jerusalem to discuss the issue and whether Gentiles were required to following Jewish practices to follow Jesus. It was the ruling of James, the brother of Christ and leader of the church, “that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God” (Acts 15:19). The early church decided to be FOR bringing people into the family of God instead of putting up unnecessary barriers that would keep them out.

Today, we are called to do the same . . . in our work lives, our relationships, our community, and our world. In this hypercritical and cynical world, we are called to be a group for who and what we’re FOR. It’s a powerful strategy for business . . . but more importantly, it is a revolutionary way to live.

    • Jesus Study Guide (Student/Study Guide)

      $12.99

In this six-session video Bible study (DVD/digital downloads sold separately), bestselling author Max Lucado explores the life and character of Jesus, helping participants become more familiar with the man at the center of the greatest story ever told. As Max explains in this study, for thirty-three years Jesus felt everything that we have ever felt: weakness, weariness, rejections. He got colds. His feelings got hurt. His feet grew tired. His head ached.

To think of Jesus in such terms almost seems irreverent. It is much easier to keep the humanity out of the incarnation. Clean up the manure from around the manger. Wipe the sweat out of his eyes. Pretend he never snored or hit his thumb with a hammer. There is something about keeping Jesus divine that keeps him distant, packaged, and predictable.

But we have to remember that by Jesus becoming human, God made it possible for us to see him and hear his voice. If we want to know what matters to God, all we need to do is look in the Bible to see what matters to Jesus. If we want to know what God is doing in our world, we need only ponder the words of Jesus. By learning more about the person Jesus was and is, we come to understand more clearly the people we were created to be.

Jesus will inspire group members to spend time at the foot of the cross and search the heart of the one who would rather die for them than live without them.

    • Acts : The Birth Of The Church

      $14.99

Luke was a first-century physician, but at some point he left his career and began documenting the rise and spread of the gospel across the known world. Such a decision could not have been easy for him to make, for we know that as a traveling companion of the apostle Paul, he endured great personal hardships and suffering for the sake of Christ. Luke’s work serves as a bridge from the life of Christ to the birth of the first church, revealing both the successes and inevitable the growing pains as the movement spread from Jerusalem, to Judea, to Samaria, and to the rest of the world.

    • Galatians : The Path To Freedom

      $14.99

The apostle Paul had more reason to be confident in his standing as a “Hebrew of Hebrews” than many of his day. As a Pharisee, he was a strict follower of Jewish Law–and a zealous persecutor of the church until the day he met Jesus face to face on the road to Damascus. Paul’s letter to the believers in Galatia contains this same form of zeal . . . but in reverse. He had learned the freedom and joy that comes from a relationship with God, and he urged his readers–and us today–to never trade that for man-made rules and practices. Paul tells us that we are justified by faith and can only find freedom in Christ alone.

    • Insights On The Book Of Isaiah

      $24.99

For more than four decades, Alan Stringfellow’s Bible studies have brought greater insight into God’s Word to thousands of believers. Now, the author of Through the Bible in One Year and Great Characters of the Bible leads readers on a chapter-by-chapter study of the book of Isaiah. Stringfellow’s in-depth teaching will bring clarity and understanding to one of the most prophetic books in Scripture. With this study, readers will learn…
*How to identify the major themes
*All the major doctrines and truths of Isaiah
*The importance and relevance of prophecy
*Important context and background for the little-known Isaiah
*The role Isaiah plays in the coming of the Messiah

By embarking on this journey, believers will learn to better understand and appreciate the role of the prophet–to foretell the future, but also to speak truth to a lost and sinful generation. Stringfellow makes powerful connections between the wealth and plenty of Isaiah’s time and the abundance and decadence of our present world. The true value of this prophecy is that it occupies us with a person, and not merely with events–the Person of our Lord Jesus Christ, who comes to suffer and returns to reign. All of this is foretold by a great poetic genius whose gripping words and imagery could only have been inspired by the hand of God.

Through these hiking and camping experiences, God taught him valuable lessons that have seen him through many difficult life experiences.

Martin’s weekly devotionals found in A Whisper in the Woods take the reader out of the noise that often accompanies living in this world and into the quiet escapades of wooded areas where the voice of God is more clearly heard.

    • Song Of Songs

      $48.99

The Song of Songs, traditionally attributed to Solomon, is a collection of lyrics that celebrate in earthly terms the love of a bridegroom and a bride. Throughout the course of early Christian history, the Song of Songs was widely read as an allegory of the love of Christ both for the church and for its individual members. In reading the Song this way, Christians were following in the steps of Jewish exegetes who saw the Song as celebrating the love of God for Israel.

In The Song of Songs, the inaugural volume of The Church’s Bible, Richard A. Norris Jr. uses commentaries and sermons from the church’s first millennium to illustrate the original Christian understanding of Solomon’s beautiful poem. In recent times, the Song of Songs has been more a focus of literary than of religious interest, but Norris’s work shows that for early Christians, this text was counted, with the Psalms and the Gospels, among those Scriptures that touched most deeply on the believer’s relation to God.

All in all, Norris’s Song of Songs is a masterful work that aptly acquaints contemporary readers with the church’s traditional way of discerning in this text a guide to the character of Christian belief and life. This volume — and the entire Church’s Bible series — will be welcomed by preachers, teachers, students, and general readers alike.

    • Gods Ambassadors : A History Of The Christian Clergy In America

      $36.99

In God’s Ambassadors E. Brooks Holifield masterfully traces the history of America’s Christian clergy from the seventeenth to the twenty-first century, analyzing the changes in practice and authority that have transformed the clerical profession.

Challenging one-sided depictions of decline in clerical authority, Holifield locates the complex story of the clergy within the context not only of changing theologies but also of transitions in American culture and society. The result is a thorough social history of the profession that also takes seriously the theological presuppositions that have informed clerical activity. With alternating chapters on Protestant and Catholic clergy, the book permits sustained comparisons between the two dominant Christian traditions in American history.

At the same time, God’s Ambassadors depicts a vocation that has remained deeply ambivalent regarding the professional status marking the other traditional learned callings in the American workplace. Changing expectations about clerical education, as well as enduring theological questions, have engendered a debate about the professional ideal that has distinguished the clerical vocation from such fields as law and medicine.

The American clergy from the past four centuries constitute a colorful, diverse cast of characters who have, in ways both obvious and obscure, helped to shape the tone of American culture. For a well-rounded narrative of their story told by a master historian, God’s Ambassadors is the book to read.

    • Karl Barths Theological Exegesis

      $49.99

For many students of Scripture and Christian theology, Karl Barth’s break with liberalism is the most important event that has occurred in theology in over 200 years. In Karl Barth’s Theological Exegesis Richard E. Burnett provides the first detailed look at this watershed event, showing how Barth read the Bible before and after his break with liberalism, how he came to read the Bible differently than most of his contemporaries, and why Barth’s contribution is still significant today.

As Burnett explains, the crux of Barth’s legacy is his abandonment of the hermeneutical tradition of Schleiermacher, which had had such a profound influence on Christian thought in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This hermeneutical tradition, which began with Herder and extended through Dilthey, Troeltsch, Wobbermin, Wernle, and Barth himself prior to 1915, is characterized by its attempt to integrate broad aspects of interpretation, to establish universally valid rules of interpretation on the basis of a general anthropology, and by its reliance on empathy.

Barth’s discovery that “the being of God is the hermeneutical problem” implied that the object to be known should determine the way taken in knowing. This fundamental insight brought about a hermeneutical revolution that gave priority to content over method, to actual exegesis over hermeneutical theory. The development of Barth’s new approach to Scripture is especially evident in his Romerbrief period, during which he developed a set of principles for properly reading Scripture. Burnett focuses on these principles, which have never been discussed at length or viewed specifically in relationship to Schleiermacher, and presents a study that challenges both “neo-orthodox” and “postmodern” readings of Barth.

This is a crucial piece of scholarship. Not only is it the first major book in English on Barth’s hermeneutics, but it also employs pioneering research in Barth studies. Burnett includes in his discussion important material only recently discovered in Switzerland and made available here in English for the first time — namely, six preface drafts that Barth wrote for his famous Romans commentary, which some regard as the greatest theological work of all time.

In making a major contribution to Barth studies, this volume will also inform scholars, pastors, and students whose interests range from modern Christian theology to the history of biblical interpretation.

      $48.33

Church historian and Luther faculty member Mark Granquist provides a new and comprehensive history of Luther Seminary just in time for the celebration of the institution’s 150th anniversary (1869-2019). Luther Seminary today is the product of the merger of number of seminaries over time. Granquist’s search of Luther’s past will provide an inside look at how Lutheran ministry was defined and formed. The path runs through the early university system, Orthodoxy, Pietism, and Rationalism, as well as the formation of Mission schools, and the beginnings of Lutheran theological education in North America. Granquist explores the confessional Norwegian Synod as well as the pietist Haugean tradition–the two bookends or twin traditions that would define and eventually become Luther Seminary. Chapters 4-6 explore each primary strand that formed the history of Luther. Chapter 7 focuses on unification and merger, concluding with the ELCA merger in 1988. The final chapter looks at more recent history, including internal unification, the challenges faced by the ELCA, and the major shifts in theological education in the early 21st century. $25.88

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger’s election as Pope Benedict XVI brought a world-class biblical theologian to the papacy. There is an intensely biblical quality to his pastoral teaching and he has demonstrated a keen concern for the authentic interpretation of sacred Scripture.

Here a foremost interpreter of Catholic thought and life offers a probing look at Benedict’s biblical theology and provides a clear and concise introduction to his life and work. Bestselling author and theologian Scott Hahn argues that the heart of Benedict’s theology is salvation history and the Bible and shows how Benedict accepts historical criticism but recognizes its limits. The author also explains how Benedict reads the overall narrative of Scripture and how he puts it to work in theology, liturgy, and Christian discipleship.

    • How To Lead In A World Of Distraction Study Guide (Student/Study Guide)

      $12.99

In this six-session video study (DVD/digital downloads sold separately), pastor Clay Scroggins builds on the principles he established in his bestselling How to Lead When You’re Not in Charge and shows participants how to take the next step in their leadership growth by developing emotional awareness. As Clay notes, we are all surrounded by “white noise”–a soul-masking tool that keeps us from hearing the voices in our lives that we really need to hear. Our busy lives, the numbing nature of entertainment, and the urgency of ministry all work together to create a toxic cocktail of emotional distraction. And while many leaders have learned to tune out this “white noise,” in the process they have become “deaf” to the inner issues to which they need to attend.

Emotional healing begins with emotional awareness–our ability to identify and understand our feelings. Developing such emotional awareness comes from engaging in spiritual practices such as fasting, meditation, Sabbath keeping, prayer, and hospitality. As Clay states, such practices today are often viewed as “countercultural,” but they are solidly biblical and instrumental for helping us identify our emotions.

Through the practices described in this guide, leaders will unmask unpleasant emotions–robbing them of their stronghold–and learn how to pay close attention to the desires within. The result is that business, church, and ministry leaders will be empowered to replace the chaos in their increasingly busy lives with an emotional competence that leads to a calmer, less stressed, and more fulfilling life than ever before.

    • Fundamentals Of New Testament Greek

      $61.99

“We know that this book works and will take students to a level not often achieved through other beginning textbooks.” So say Stanley Porter and his coauthors in the preface to their Fundamentals of New Testament Greek — an ambitious, comprehensive introduction to the grammar and vocabulary of the Greek New Testament.

This first-year Greek textbook discusses all the forms and basic syntax of Koine Greek, complete with extensive paradigms, examples, and explanations. Porter, Reed, and O’Donnell’s Fundamentals of New Testament Greek features pedagogically sound and linguistically informed techniques of language instruction. The volume introduces the individual words and grammatical details of Greek, sensitive to their frequency of use in the New Testament, reinforcing for students the elements that they will most often encounter. Grammatical forms, including the less common ones, are analyzed and explained in detail, often with illustrative examples from the Greek New Testament. The authors include complete paradigms and give numerous examples; the vocabulary list includes nearly one thousand words, which are introduced throughout the book’s thirty chapters.

Students who complete this text will be able to move directly into Greek exegesis courses and more advanced Greek-language courses. Fundamentals of New Testament Greek will prove invaluable for gaining a thorough foundational understanding of New Testament Greek, including full exposure to the formation, accenting, and semantics of its complex verbal system.

    • Remember Me : A Novella About Finding Our Way To The Cross

      $21.99

“‘It is finished, ‘ Jesus says. It’s a bold declaration for us to make too. What does it mean to say ‘It is finished’ when so much is unfinished? It means we are people who live hope in two directions, both backward and forward. We long for the kingdom to come in fullness, even as it has already come. And we trust that the One who has begun the good work in us and for us will indeed complete it.” In this sequel to Shades of Light, Katherine Rhodes, the beloved director of the New Hope Retreat Center, finds her own grief tapped by Wren Crawford’s struggles with depression and loss. Through a series of letters to Wren, Katherine reflects on the meaning of Christ’s suffering and shares her own story of finding hope. How does one begin to live again under the crushing weight of grief? And how can healing come when there’s so much left unresolved? With Katherine as a companion in sorrow, Wren moves forward in her commitment to paint the stations of the cross for a prayer journey at New Hope, discovering along the way a deeper communion with the Man of Sorrows, acquainted with grief. Readers are invited into a similar journey of reflection through Katherine’s words and Wren’s paintings. At the back of the book, a devotional guide with Scripture readings, prayer prompts, and full-color art provides the opportunity to ponder the depths of God’s love by meditating on Jesus’ journey to the cross.

    • Wormwood Prophecy : NASA, Donald Trump, And A Cosmic Cover-Up Of End-Time P

      $19.99

Does the Bible predict an asteroid…or something else?

This book will challenge your interpretation of end-times theology and help you sharpen your understanding in light of current times.

Does Revelation 8:10-11 describe an asteroid?

Is the Wormwood star from Revelation 8 already headed toward Earth? Are NASA and high-level government officials aware of an asteroid that is on a collision course with our planet? Is that why President Trump sanctioned a colossal increase to planetary defense? Do the prophecies from ancient cultures and religions across the globe all point to a catastrophic planetary event that has scientists and politicians taking extreme preventative measures under the public radar?

Earth is not currently prepared for the scope of impact that may be just around the corner, and people in high places know it…

But what will the biblical Wormwood actually be? Traditional scholarly interpretation claims it will be an asteroid. Others postulate that the eschatological poisoning of one-third of all Earth’s waters and the devastation of our planet’s ecology might not be as detectable as we may believe: it could hit suddenly and without warning, like an angel of God appearing in the sky with fire and light, bringing judgment in an instant.

Follow Thomas Horn as he blazes a trail through these questions and many others, posing answers that very few in the church today are willing to provide.

    • Ireland To The Wild West

      $19.98

Born in 1846 in Ireland at the start of the “Great Hunger,” James Kinnier Wilson emigrated to Philadelphia to start a new life at seventeen years old. After his life took a dramatic turn, he found himself attending Princeton and then a college in Scotland, where he met Agnes Hately, the talented daughter of a famous figure in the Scottish “Disruption”–the emergence of the Free Church of Scotland.

Agnes and James, now newlyweds, crossed the dangerous Atlantic and settled in rural New Jersey. While there, Agnes wrote intimate letters home about her children, the people around her, the church, and the dangers of endemic disease.

Called in 1878 to the Wild West to found churches and to farm, Agnes again revealed in detail the conditions of her life on the frontier and her impressions of American women, cowboys, servant girls, church-goers, and provides some never before seen detail to what is called the “Last Indian Raid in Kansas.”

In Ireland to the Wild West, Marcus Paul uses these letters penned by Agnes to take readers on a journey through Agnes and James’ engagement, marriage, dangerous travels, and their arrival and life in America. Through her letters, a treasure trove for historians, readers will gain a unique insight to that time period and will find an engrossing and inspiring story of romance, faith, tragedy, and hope.

    • 1 Corinthians : Interpreted By Early Christian Commentators

      $49.99

Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, one of the earliest Christian writings, had enormous influence on the formation of Christian teaching. In this Church’s Bible volume Judith L. Kovacs weaves comments from all the commentaries and sermon series written in Latin or Greek between the years 250 and 800, illustrating the historic Christian understanding of this crucial text.

The church fathers gathered here include Augustine of Hippo, Irenaeus, Gregory of Nyssa, Athanasius, Origen, John Chrysostom, and many more. Preceding the line-by-line exegesis are a lucid essay by Robert Louis Wilken on how the church fathers interpreted the New Testament, an informative introduction to 1 Corinthians by Kovacs, and two chapters of general patristic commentary on Paul and on this letter. Completing the volume are several helpful appendixes and indexes.

Freshly translating many passages into idiomatic English for the first time, Kovacs does not merely excerpt random quotes from the church fathers but instead produces a sustained interaction with their direct comments on 1 Corinthians. This soaking in the wisdom of the past is sure to spiritually refresh and intellectually sharpen contemporary readers who seek to better understand this part of Scripture.

    • Thiselton On Hermeneutics

      $98.99

Anthony Thiselton’s masterful work in the field of hermeneutics has impacted countless students and scholars over the past several decades. Especially influential was his Two Horizons (1980), a call to take seriously the contexts of both the reader and the text. Thiselton’s work continues to carry much weight, yet there has been no single place to go to access a helpful array of his writings — until now.

Thiselton on Hermeneutics provides select expositions and critical discussions of hermeneutics as a multidisciplinary area. Biblical interpretation, philosophical hermeneutics, literary theory, postmodernism, and Christian theology genuinely interact in these forty-two studies to form a coherent whole. Thiselton’s unique interactive and multidisciplinary approach shines through the volume. Ten of these essays — almost a quarter of the collection — are new (never published before) or quite recent.

Theologians, biblical scholars, philosophers, and many other academics will appreciate this distillation of the pioneering perspectives and creative insights of Anthony C. Thiselton.
