    • Seeing Through The Median

      $36.95

In my experience, I have found very few self-avowed Christian writers who interact with cultural studies theory using its terminology and concepts. Warren attempts this in his text and for the most part, I believe he succeeds. He leaps off from Stuart Hall’s notions about commodities, production, and hegemony to challenge religious people to consider how they interact with their culture. Although the title would suggest that Warren’s analysis is limited to media, he also deals with the related areas of image interpretation and advertising to move people to think about the hegemonic structures of culture in which they live.
The only shortfall of the book was the chapter on metaphor. Although this is an important topic in and of itself, I didn’t think that it fit with the overall subject matter of Warren’s text.

    • Caretakers Of Our Common House

      $30.99

North American culture bombards girls and women with negative and demeaning images of their gender. It trains girls and women to “give themselves away” by overemphasizing their caring for others and underdeveloping their sense of voice and personal authority. Carol Lakey Hess asks in this book whether caring families and the church can make a difference in the outcome of our daughters’ development. Weaving together theological, psychological, and biblical sources, Hess examines how theologians of self-sacrifice thwart both the spiritual and the psychological development of women by subverting their necessary self-assertion. The importance of self-differentiation and cognitive autonomy and of caring and connection are discussed, using as illustrations biblical stories, excerpts from novels, and an in-depth look at eating disorders.

This study examines the changes and developments in three early Christian communities’ expectations of Christ’s return and the End of the World. Mark 13, Matthew 24 and 25 and Didache 16 are analyzed to find how early Christian expectations developed and how they were affected by the delay of Christ’s return. The book questions the accepted models of change and offers new insights into the communities behind the Gospels of Mark and Matthew and behind the early Christian writing known as the Didache.

A teenage girl has been missing from her Montgomery, Alabama, home for six weeks. She may be a runaway, a crime victim, or both. What’s amazing is other people’s lack of concern. THE GIFT OF PAIN
      A world without pain?

Can such a place exist? It not only can-it does. But it’s no utopia. It’s a colony for leprosy patients: a world where people literally feel no pain, and reap horrifying consequences.

His work with leprosy patients in India and the United States convinced Dr. Paul Brand that pain truly is one of God’s great gifts to us. In this inspiring story of his fifty-year career as a healer, Dr. Brand probes the mystery of pain and reveals its importance. As an indicator that lets us know something is wrong, pain has a value that becomes clearest in its absence.

The Gift of Pain looks at what pain is and why we need it. Together, the renowned surgeon and award-winning writer Philip Yancey shed fresh light on a gift that none of us want and none of us can do without.

    • Wesley And The Quadrilateral

      $27.99

Since its first appearance in the Discipline in 1972, this formulation has come to be known as the “Wesleyan Quadrilateral.” The United Methodist Church has ever since been wrestling with how best to understand, interpret, and apply the concept of the Quadrilateral. Most United Methodists think that Scripture, tradition, reason, and experience can and must be used together in some way theologically, but there is considerable disagreement among them as to how this can best be done. The authors of this volume suggest that the solution lies in a “Wesleyan reappropriation” of a Quadrilateral as “the rule of Scripture within a trilateral hermeneutic of tradition, reason, and experience.” They are convinced that Scripture is primary but argue that it cannot function in a manner that negates the other components, for Scripture cannot be read or interpreted without the meditation of tradition, reason, and experience. And they hope that this formulation, resulting from their extended conversations with each other may be the beginnings of a shared theological language with which United Methodism can face the twenty-first century.

Marius Reiser argues here that the theme of judgement lies close to the heart of Jesus’ proclamation. For Jesus, the certainty of the coming of judgement is the presupposition of the ultimate coming of the reign of God. Judgement and salvation are two sides of the same coin. This book offers a corrective to a one-sided emphasis on Jesus’ message of salvation – to say nothing of the picture of a noneschatological Jesus. This work, originally published in German, features a new introduction in which Reisner engages the current American discussion of the historical Jesus, particularly engaging Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan. Reisner goes on to offer and overview of the concept of judgement in early Jewish literature and in the preaching of John the Baptizer. He then concentrates on the teachings of Jesus, both sayings and parables. Included are excurses on important related motifs like the “divine passive” and “conversion.” Marius Reiser is Professor of New Testament at the University of Tubingen.

    • Eschatology Messianism And The Dead Sea Scrolls A Print On Demand Title

      $23.99

The New Testament is of prime importance for understanding early Jewish and Christian messianism and eschatology. Yet often the New Testament presumes a background and context of belief without fully articulating it. Early Jewish and Christian messianism and eschatology, after all, did not emerge in a vacuum; they developed out of early Jewish hopes that had their roots in the Old Testament. A knowledge of early Jewish literature, and especially of the Dead Sea Scrolls from Qumran, is essential for understanding the shape of these ideas at the turn of the era.

In Eschatology, Messianism, and the Dead Sea Scrolls, Craig A. Evans and Peter W. Flint have assembled eight essays from outstanding scholars who address the issue from a variety of angles. After an introduction by the editors, successive essays deal with the Old Testament foundations of messianism; the figure of Daniel at Qumran; the Teacher of Righteousness; the expectation of the end in the Scrolls; and Jesus, Paul, and John seen in light of Qumran. These essays originated at a conference for a lay audience and retain much of the popular appeal they had when first delivered. The usefulness of the volume as a resource for students, pastors, and interested laypeople is enhanced by a select bibliography and indexes.

    • How Good Do We Have To Be

      $18.99

From the author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People comes an inspiring new bestseller that puts human feelings of guilt and inadequacy in perspective – and teaches us how we can learn to accept ourselves and others even when we and they are less than perfect. How Good Do We Have to Be? is for everyone who experiences that sense of guilt and disappointment. Harold Kushner, writing with his customary generosity and wisdom, shows us how human life is too complex for anyone to live it without making mistakes, and why we need not fear the loss of God’s love when we are less than perfect. Harold Kushner begins by offering a radically new interpretation of the story of Adam and Eve, which he sees as a tale of Paradise Outgrown rather than Paradise Lost: eating from the Tree of Knowledge was not an act of disobedience, but a brave step forward toward becoming human, complete with the richness of work, sexuality and child-rearing, and a sense of our mortality.

Drawing on modern literature, psychology, theology,,and his own thirty years of experience as a congregational rabbi, Harold Kushner reveals how acceptance and forgiveness can change our relationships with the most important people in our lives and help us meet the bold and rewarding challenge of being human.

    • Makers Of Christian Theology In America

      $49.99

This important reference work presents critical, analytical, and interpretive essays on more than ninety figures who have been particularly important in shaping and influencing the development of Christian theology in America. The work is organized into four major sections: The Colonial Period (1607-1789); The National Period (1789-1865); The Post Civil War Period (1865-1918); and The Modern Period (1918-1970). Each section has a separate introduction by the editors tracing major theological developments in that historical period. A substantial concluding article by Martin Marty traces theological developments, trends and movements in American theology since 1965.

Each essay includes: (1) basic biographical data regarding the life, career, and major writings of the figure; (2) an analysis of the key theological issues and/or concepts to which the figure responded; (3) a critical discussion of the major theological themes developed in the course of the figure’s career; and (4) an assessment of the immediate influence of the figure’s thought and its significance for subsequent theological developments. Brief bibliographies at the end of each essay point readers to the most important and useful primary and secondary literature for each figure.

“Makers of Christian Theology is a welcome and long-needed addition to reference and textbook possibilities for courses on Religion in North America. . . . It is dramatically more inclusive and even-handed in its selection of figures for an historical orientation to theological developments in North American Christianity than any previous attempt. . . . Both the design of the book and the content of the individual essays reflect the fruit of the best current work on Christian theology in America. I recommend it highly!” –Randy L. Maddox, Professor of Religion and Philosophy

The year is 1963, and self-important Byron Watson is the bane of his younger brother Kenny’s existence. Constantly in trouble for one thing or another, from straightening his hair into a “conk” to lighting fires to freezing his lips to the mirror of the new family car, Byron finally pushes his family too far. Before this “official juvenile delinquent” can cut school or steal change one more time, Momma and Dad finally make good on their threat to send him to the deep south to spend the summer with his tiny, strict grandmother. Soon the whole family is packed up, ready to make the drive from Flint, Michigan, straight into one of the most chilling moments in America’s history: the burning of the Sixteenth Avenue Baptist Church with four little girls inside.
Christopher Paul Curtis’s alternately hilarious and deeply moving novel, winner of the Newbery Honor and the Coretta Scott King Honor, blends the fictional account of an African American family with the factual events of the violent summer of 1963. Fourth grader Kenny is an innocent and sincere narrator; his ingenuousness lends authenticity to the story and invites readers of all ages into his world, even as it changes before his eyes.

    • Jesus And The Angels

      $160.00

This study is an examination of the influence of angelology on the Christology of the Apocalypse of John. In the Apocalypse, Jesus appears in glorious form reminiscent of angels in Jewish and Christian literature. Dr. Carrell asks what significance this has for the Christology of the Apocalypse. He concludes that, although he has the form and function of an angel, Jesus is clearly portrayed as divine, and that through this portrayal, the Apocalypse both upholds monotheism while providing a means for Jesus to be presented in visible, glorious form to his Church.

    • Women Seduction And Betrayal In Biblical Narrative

      $54.00

This accessible, readable book breaks new ground in the cultural study of the Bible, challenging the traditional mode of reading the women in the Bible. Using the stories of the “wicked” literary figures in the Bible–the wife of Potiphar, Bathshebha, Delilah and Salome–Bach argues that biblical characters have a “life” in the mind of the reader independent of the stories in which they were created. Thus, the reader becomes the site at which the texts and the cultures that produced them come together.

    • Community Of The Wise The Letter Of James

      $51.95

Robert Wall’s commentary interprets James from within the context of Scripture itself. By emphasizing how James compares and contrasts particularly with Paul’s letters, Wall shows how vital James is as a part of the Christian canon. He argues that James contains a “way of wisdom” that guides believers through trials and on to Christian maturity. The commentary contains an introduction and several excursuses on various topics. The commentary itself focuses on passages and is written in a relatively non-technical style. Greek words are transliterated and English equivalents are provided so those with no knowledge of Greek can follow the discussion. Robert W. Wall is Professor of Biblical Studies at Seattle Pacific University.

    • Prostitute In The Family Tree

      $28.00

The Bible is funny! Very funny, according to this new book from Douglas Adams. But in order to discover this humor, Adams says, readers must take Bible passages in their entirety – not just as selected lines. When looking at the Bible as a whole, readers see not just selected, moralistic passages. Instead they see biblical stories with all their rough edges – the unethical and ambiguous characters, the unsolved problems, and the surprising endings. Adams’s book shows how seeing these faults in biblical figures and events strengthens modern Christians’ faith. In addition to pointing out cleverness in the Bible. Adams offers readers various practical methods and examples of how storytelling and some simple dramatic techniques can recover the biblical humor for today’s education, worship, and preaching.
