  • Plain Faith : A True Story Of Tragedy Loss And Leaving The Amish

    $15.99

This is the true story of Ora-Jay and Irene Eash, Amish farmers from northwest Montana whose lives changed in an instant when a semi-truck struck the family buggy, killing their two young daughters. After the accident, the couple turned to their Amish community for comfort, but they remained haunted by the thought that they might not see their girls again in heaven. Would their deeds be good enough? Eventually Ora-Jay and Irene learned that grace—not works—was enough to ensure their place in eternity. But with that knowledge came the realization that they could no longer live in an Amish community that didn’t share this precious belief. Could they sever their connection to the Amish family they loved? This is the story of their journey to the hope that is heaven, a hope stronger than the loss of children, family, and a way of life. Fans of Amish fiction will appreciate such a real-life look into the Amish community, co-written by bestselling author Tricia Goyer, and readers of all kinds will resonate with this tale of courage, resilience, and the redemption found in the grace of Jesus.

  • He Leadeth Me

    $16.00

Captured by a Russian army during World War II and convicted of being a “Vatican spy,” Jesuit Father Walter J. Ciszek spent 23 agonizing years in Soviet prisons and the labor camps of Siberia. Only through an utter reliance on God’s will did he manage to endure the extreme hardship. He tells of the courage he found in prayer–a courage that eased the loneliness, the pain, the frustration, the anguish, the fears, the despair. For, as Ciszek relates, the solace of spiritual contemplation gave him an inner serenity upon which he was able to draw amidst the “arrogance of evil” that surrounded him. Ciszek learns to accept the inhuman work in the infamous Siberian salt mines as a labor pleasing to God. And through that experice, he was able to turn the adverse forces of circumstance into a source of positive value and a means of drawing closer to the compassionate and never-forsaking Divine Spirit.

He Leadeth Me is a book to inspire all Christians to greater faith and trust in God–even in their darkest hour. As the author asks, “What can ultimately trouble the soul that accepts every moment of every day as a gift from the hands of God and strives always to do his will?”

When Dan Fountain and his wife arrived in the Congo in 1961, the challenges to effective medical missions seemed overwhelming. As the only doctor for a quarter of a million residents of the Vanga Health Zone, and with nothing but a dilapidated mission hospital and an undertrained staff to run it, Dr. Fountain turned to prayer, innovation, and local partnerships to meet the vast needs of his area.

Health for All tells the story of an ever-increasing vision-from curative care to community health, from a barely functioning hospital to a network of successful health services, from a lack of qualified workers to a local residency training program, from biomedical reductionism to whole person care, from cultural stalemate to worldview transformation. Dr. Fountain’s insights into health and wholeness have changed countless lives and communities. Part memoir, part history, part textbook, Health for All is the legacy of a man who patterned his life and labor after that of the Great Physician.

As the nineteen-year-old convict visualized himself stabbing his intended victims, God intervened and provided deliverance. The encounter took only a moment, but getting there had taken a lifetime. Instantly, all the years of anger and rejection flashed before Eddie Spencer’s eyes. As memories flooded back, Inmate 46857 felt the pain and poverty of his childhood. He pictured himself the morning his only pair of shoes had fallen apart and his mother sent him to school wearing his sister’s shoes. As Eddie stepped into his first grade classroom, his classmates taunted him, “Look at Eddie Spencer. He’s got little-girl shoes on!” Humiliation and revenge gripped his young mind, launching him on a journey of crime and violence in the streets of the Mississippi Delta Finally, Eddie recalled the night he slipped into a house, pointed a gun at a sleeping man’s face and demanded, “Give me all your money!” His victim handed over the cash, but he also spoke some amazing words that Eddie would never forget. As the words replayed in his head, Inmate 46857 knew exactly what he must do. He put away his “shank” and made the choice that changed his heart.

  • Saved By Her Enemy

    $20.99

For her entire life, Rafraf, a devout Muslim, had been told that Americans were the enemy. Her understanding of the world, of her place in it, and of the United States had been steeped in the culture of Iraq under the rule of Saddam Hussein. Yet, in the midst of insurgents attempting to kidnap and kill her, she found herself on the receiving end of lifesaving help from those she considered her enemies.

Rafraf suddenly finds herself living with a Christian family in the Bible Belt of America. Nothing had prepared her for this new reality-the life of a college student in a vastly foreign culture, in a community as far from her expectations as she could have imagined, and in a family that opens their hearts to enfold her.

Saved by Her Enemy is a riveting journey of two very different people from opposite sides of the world, of faith, of experience, and of expectations. The dramatic intersection of their lives and their journey together is an inspiration to those who have ever felt there was more to life than the world they knew.

A young Iraqi woman, an American war correspondent, and a true tale of friendship, faith, and family against the backdrop of war and the collision of cultures

This is a story of a very unlikely friendship-between American war correspondent Don Teague and Rafraf Barrak, an Iraqi college girl who won a job as a translator for NBC during the early months of violence in the wake of the American invasion of Iraq.

While covering a story together, the two were nearly killed by a bomb, an experience that created a bond between them that led them down a path neither could have imagined.

What follows is a story of transformation, as Rafraf-from a devout Muslim family-becomes the target of terrorist threats to kidnap and murder her. Don and his fellow correspondents mobilize to help save her life and suddenly Rafraf finds herself on the receiving end of an offer for safety and a new life in the United States.

Dramatically transplanted from the streets of Iraq to the Bible Belt of middle America, Rafraf finds everything that she knew-or thought she knew-about herself, her values, her world, even faith and family, turned upside down. Meanwhile, Don; his wife, Kiki; and their children discover they’ve embarked on an adventure with Rafraf that reshapes their lives.

This captivating story inspires us all to join Don and Rafraf in discovering that there is far more to life than the world we know.

Maryam Rostampour and Marziyeh Amirizadeh knew they were putting their lives on the line. Islamic laws in Iran forbade them from sharing their Christian beliefs, but in three years, they’d covertly put New Testaments into the hands of twenty thousand of their countrymen and started two secret house churches.

In 2009, they were finally arrested and held in the notorious Evin Prison in Tehran, a place where inmates are routinely tortured and executions are commonplace. In the face of ruthless interrogations, persecution, and a death sentence, Maryam and Marziyeh chose to take the radical-and dangerous-step of sharing their faith inside the very walls of the government stronghold that was meant to silence them. The church didn’t have answers. The world didn’t have answers. The gay community just tried to make me give up and accept this as my innate identity. Yet, something deep inside of me kept knocking at the door of my heart saying, “There must be more. This cannot be your ultimate destiny and identity.” When God met me with the Truth of the transforming power of Jesus Christ, and I began what I call my incredible journey, I began to realize that I’d been lied to by the world and the philosophies of man. After seven years of freedom under my belt, the Lord asked me to begin publicly sharing my story because there were others out there who felt the same as I felt-that there must be more. This book is for those who want to experience God in an intimate, life-changing way, regardless of whether or not they’ve ever struggled with unwanted same-sex attraction. This is my story, yet really it’s the story of redemption found in knowing Jesus Christ intimately. –Dennis Jernigan

  • Pastoral Work : Engagements With The Vision Of Eugene Peterson

    $26.00

Eugene Peterson may be the most influential theological writer in the church today. Yet because most of his career has not been in academia there is not much critical engagement with his work. Here some of the finest scholar-pastors we have describe the way Peterson has inspired and infuriated on the way to (hopefully) more faithful pastorates.

Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) has been called the father of the symphony and the string quartet. A friend of Mozart and a teacher of Beethoven, “Papa” Haydn composed an amazing variety of music — symphonies, string quartets, concerti, masses, operas, oratorios, keyboard works — and his prolific output celebrates both the heights and depths of life.

In this fascinating book Calvin Stapert combines his skills as a biographer and a musicologist to recount Haydn’s steady rise from his humble origins to true musical greatness. Unlike other biographers, Stapert argues that Haydn’s work was a product of his devout Catholic faith, even though he worked in an increasingly secular society and the bulk of his output was in secular genres. In addition to telling Haydn’s life story, Stapert includes accessible listening guides to The Creation and portions of other well-known works to help Haydn listeners more fully appreciate the brilliance behind his music.

  • Extremist For Love

    $24.00

In an era where people are often sorted into the categories of ‘thinker’ and ‘doer’, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stands out – a rare mix of the deeply profound thinker and intellect who put the fruit of that reflection into the service of direct social action.
In this helpful telling of King’s life, Dr. Rufus Burrow knits together the story of King’s family, his intellectual journey, and his experience of the pervasive racism of America in that era in a way that highlights the onnections between King’s thought and his actions.

The result is a renewed understanding of the roots of King’s actions and a fresh appreciation for how intellectual activity can impact our world in surprisingly direct ways.

    $18.00

    Me

    I sometimes fear

    That people cannot understand

    That I hear.

    And I know

That they don’t believe I go

    To every extreme

    To try to express

    My need to talk.

    If only they could walk

    In my shoes

    They would share my news:

    I am in here.

And trying to speak every day

    In some kind of way.

Though she cannot speak, Elizabeth Bonker writes poetry that shines a light on the hidden inner world of autism and the world around us. I Am in Here is the spiritual journey of a mother and daughter who refuse to give up hope, who celebrate their victories, and who keep moving forward despite the obstacles. Elizabeth’s poetry and her mother’s stirring storytelling combine in this inspirational book to proclaim that there is always a reason to take the next step–with hope.

If beauty is only skin-deep, then why does the color of that skin matter so much? Why does it create dividing lines within one’s own race, community, and even the family?

From birth, Jinnie was darker than her siblings, and relatives unthinkingly punished her for it. She learned early that those with lighter skin-tones in the black community were considered smarter, prettier, and more worthy. The race war was just as fierce within the black community as it was between blacks and whites, but in more subtle ways, with fewer options to find success.

Despite the constant obstacles, Jinnie earned scholarships, left home, and entered a new world, where the age-old battle of skin-tone continued. She blossomed as she learned that designations such as “blue-black” and “pitch-black” didn’t automatically mean failure. Her outer beauty increased as her inner beauty grew stronger.

However, it wasn’t until she discovered the battle in her own heart, mind, and soul, and trusted in Christ’s power, that she found peace, healing, and victory in the most vital war of all.

  • When Quitting Is Not An Option

    $19.95

    Castle Quay Books
Can I do this? I asked myself. I’d been repeating the same question for the last 24 hours. People seem to say, “It’s Arvid-of course he can do it.” If they knew how many times I struggled with self-doubt, with the question of whether I should bike another kilometre, they would never feel so confident. This was one of those times. Giving up now was, for me, symbolic of giving up on the kids at MCF. Many of them had been abandoned by parents, relatives and society, left to fend for themselves. God had never given up on them, and I was not going to quit a silly bike ride. I made up my mind: I will not give up. When Arvid set out on a 40 km bike ride only to give up after 30 km, his future as a cyclist seemed bleak. Yet, more than 15 years later, Arvid was racing alongside the world’s most elite ultra-marathon athletes. This is his story of failure, courage, disappointment, triumph and laughter-and a few life lessons along the way.

  • Harriet Beecher Stowe

    $34.99

So you’re the little woman who started this big war, Abraham Lincoln is said to have quipped when he met Harriet Beecher Stowe. Her 1852 novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin converted readers by the thousands to the anti-slavery movement and served notice that slavery’s days were numbered. Overnight Stowe became a celebrity, but to defenders of slavery she was the devil in petticoats.

Most writing about Stowe treats her as a literary figure and social reformer while underplaying her Christian faith. But Nancy Koester’s biography treats Stowe’s faith as central to her life — both her public fight against slavery and her own struggle through deep personal grief to find a gracious God.

    $19.99

In Beyond the Possible, Reverend Cecil Williams, one of the most well-known and provocative ministers in the United States, reflects on his fifty years creating radical social change as the head of San Francisco’s Memorial Glide Church.

Williams’ innovations, such as HIV testing during services, have drawn protest from more conservative factions within the Methodist Church, but his work in the community has drawn praise from the likes of Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, and Warren Buffett.

Written with Glide Church founding pastor Janice Mirikitani, and with a foreword by Dave Eggers, Beyond the Possible is a book of wisdom, providing lessons that Reverend Williams has learned so that readers can learn to embrace their true selves, accept all those around them, and fully live day to day through social change as worship.
