    • Hour Before Daylight

      $17.00

Carter writes about the powerful rhythms of countryside and community in a sharecropping economy, offering an unforgettable portrait of his father, a brilliant farmer and a strict segregationist who treated black workers with respect and fairness; his strong-willed and well-read mother; and the five other people who shaped his early life, three of whom were black.

Carter’s clean and eloquent prose evokes a time when the cycles of life were predictable and simple and the rules were heartbreaking and complex. In his singular voice and with a novelist’s gift for detail, Jimmy Carter creates a sensitive portrait of an era that shaped the nation and recounts a classic, American story of enduring importance.

    • Man Who Was Thursday

      $10.00

      G. K. Chesterton’s surreal masterpiece is a psychological thriller that centers on seven anarchists in turn-of-the-century London who call themselves by the names of the days of the week. Chesterton explores the meanings of their disguised identities in what is a fascinating mystery and, ultimately, a spellbinding allegory. As Jonathan Lethem remarks in his Introduction, The real characters are the ideas. Chesterton’s nutty agenda is really quite simple: to expose moral relativism and parlor nihilism for the devils he believes them to be. This wouldn’t be interesting at all, though, if he didn’t also show such passion for giving the devil his due. He animates the forces of chaos and anarchy with every ounce of imaginative verve and rhetorical force in his body.

One of our foremost historians of religion here chronicles the arrival of Christianity in the New World, tracing the turning points in the development of the immigrant church that have led to today’s distinctly American faith.

Taking a unique approach to this fascinating subject, Noll focuses on what was new about organized Christian religion on the American continent by comparison with European Christianity. In doing so, Noll provides a broad outline of the major events in the history of the Christian churches that have filled North America with such remarkable vitality and diversity. He also highlights some of the most important interpretive issues in the transfer of the hereditary religion of Europe to America.

    • Sacrament Of Reconciliation

      $29.95

Although it did not come from Christ in the form it has today, it is clear from Scripture that reconciliation was central to the ministry of Christ. In The Sacrament of Reconciliation David Coffey examines the theology of reconciliation and addresses the crisis that the sacrament faces in the present pastoral situation of the Church.

Father Coffey calls on Scripture and tradition, to the magisterium, and to theology in his analysis. However, he also moves beyond these to look at the practice of the Church and to the liturgy as it is regulated, celebrated, and experienced. In doing so, he presents a theology of the sacrament of reconciliation that is truly based on, and inspired by, the liturgy. This theology is molded by two contextual factors: the crisis that the sacrament is currently undergoing in the developed nations of the West and the restrictions imposed by Rome on the “third rite,” the most communal of the three forms of the sacrament.

Since the sacrament of reconciliation exists for the forgiveness of postbaptismal sin, chapter one is devoted to a theology of sin. Here, Father Coffey identifies what the main theological cause is at the heart of the present crisis, namely, a serious and widespread confusion about the nature of sin. Chapter two focuses on the Church’s ministry of reconciliation. This chapter provides both essential knowledge and a response to the widely held view that one does not need to turn to the Church in order to obtain forgiveness from God for sin. Chapter three examines the four parts of the sacrament: contrition, confession, absolution, and the prescribed work of penance. The investigation in this chapter suggests theological limits to possible future reforms of the sacrament. In chapter four Father Coffey offers a detailed examination of the three sacramental rites and the nonsacramental service set down by The Rite of Penance. Finally, in chapter five, Father Coffey offers some predictions about the future of the sacrament, based on his study.

    • In The Latter Days

      $19.98

“What in the World is God Doing?” asks Vinson Synan. Evil has swept the earth in the twentieth century-the bloodiest in human history. Yet this century has also seen an astounding outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Writing with both a historian’s perspective and prophetic urgency, Synan helps us understand our times. Today, God is giving great gifts in times of great trouble. In the Latter Days, describes the Pentecostal outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the twentieth century. It is the greatest revival in human history. It has touched millions of lives, reached across denominational barriers, restored spiritual gifts to Christian life, and permanently reshaped Christianity. The Pentecostal movement began humbly in a Kansas farmhouse and a shabby Los Angeles meeting hall. It spread rapidly throughout the U.S., spawning several new fast-growing denominations, and within a few decades had taken hold in every continent. then, in the 1960s, even Pentecostal Christians were amazed when a neo-Pentecostal movement erupted in the mainline Protestant denominations and the charismatic renewal unexpectedly appeared in the Catholic Church. In the Latter Days tells the whole dramatic story of God’s Pentecostal working our day–a day of great evil and–a day of great blessing

    • Jesus And The Village Scribes

      $45.00

This volume challenges Gerd Theissen’s dominant thesis of “wandering radicals” as the earliest spreaders of the Jesus tradition. Several conclusions emerge: (1) the textual evidence for the “wandering radicals” hypothesis is not tenable and it must be replaced with one that more closely comports with the evidence: (2) the immediate context of the Jesus movement, and of Q in particular, is the socio-economic crisis in Galilee under the Romans; and (3) the formation of Q is the product of Galilean village scribes in the Jesus movement reacting to the negative developments in Galilee that affected their social standing. Arnal moves decisively beyond earlier Q studies, which focused almost exclusively on literary history without dealing with the social realities of the first century.

Building a marriage is a lifelong endeavor for both men and women. Family advocate Kay James calls these the “things I wish I had known before I got married”: advice on finances, sex, children, and dealing with the extended family. Noting that the apostle Paul exhorted older women not to inspire or counsel younger women, but to teach them how to be wives to their husbands, Kay offers a lifetime’s wealth of wisdom for creating an unbreakable marriage relationship.

    • Case For Marriage

      $20.00

A groundbreaking look at the most basic and universal of all human institutions, this authoritative and provocative book reveals the benefits-emotional, physical, economic, and sexual-that marriage brings to individuals and society as a whole.

Everyone knows that we are experiencing an epidemic of divorce; rates of single-parenthood and unmarried cohabitation are skyrocketing while marriage rates continue to decline. Yet 93% of Americans still say they hope to form a lasting and happy union with one person, though fewer now believe that this is possible.

Numerous books have been written about the impact of divorce on men, women, children, and society at large. But no one has yet studied the long-term benefits of being and staying married. The Case for Marriage is a critically important intervention in the national debate about the future of the family. Based on the authoritative research of family sociologist Linda Waite and other scholars, the book’s findings dramatically contradict the anti-marriage myths that have become the common sense of most Americans. Today a broad consensus holds that marriage is a bad deal for women, that divorce is better for children when parents are unhappy, and that marriage is essentially a private choice, not a public institution. Waite and Gallagher flatly contradict these assumptions, arguing instead that by a broad range of indices, being married is actually better for you physically, materially, and spiritually than being single or divorced. Married people live longer, have better health, earn more money and accumulate more wealth, feel more fulfilled in their lives, enjoy more satisfying sexual relationships, and have happier and more successful children than those who remain single, cohabit, or get divorced. Statistics show, for example, that violence is less prevalent in married households and that divorce reduces male life expectancy on the order of a pack-a-day cigarette habit.

While their book is not primarily a work of moral exhortation, the authors argue that in order for marriage to do its beneficial work it must be treated as a socially preferred option, not merely one choice among others that are equally valid. Combining clearheaded analysis, penetrating cultural criticism, and practical advice for strengthening the institution of marriage, the authors provide clear, essential guidelines for reestablishing marriage as the foundation for a healthy and happy society.

    • Bride Of The Lamb

      $49.99

Sergius Bulgakov is thought by many to be the twentieth century’s foremost Russian Orthodox theologian. The Bride of the Lamb is widely regarded as Bulgakov’s magnum opus and, even more, as one of the greatest works ever produced in the modern Orthodox church. This book is now available in English thanks to esteemed translator Boris Jakim, along with an introduction to Bulgakov and his theological context.

For readers new to Russian religious thought, The Bride of the Lamb presents a fresh approach to Christian doctrine. Bulgakov examines issues of ecclesiology and eschatology from a sophiological perspective. This distinctive Russian approach, based on the doctrine of Sophia, the wisdom of God, sees the Creator and creation intimately linked as Divine-humanity. The Bride of the Lamb explores the nature of created beings, the relationship between God and the world, the role of the church, and such eschatological themes as the second coming of Jesus, resurrection and judgment, and the afterlife.

The authors map an approach to culture from four signifigant perspectives: ethnicity, class, displacement, and religious beliefs. They describe the signifigant ways in which culture influences human beings, detail how cultural influences affect and complicate communication in general and preaching in particular, and then recommend practical strategies for improving communication in culturally diverse settings. Preaching to Every Pew is an invaluable aid to pastors and seminaries yearning for more effective ways to proclaim the gospel.

    • 1-2 Chronicles

      $40.00

Paul Hooker suggests here that 1 and 2 Chronicles are not a “history of Israel,” but rather a theological reflection on the story of Israel’s faith. The Chronicler uses the narratives of Samuel and Kings, skillfully edited and augmented, to develop his vision of Israel. At the center of that vision lies the assertion that Israel is the people of God, selected by God from among all the nations, and set apart to worship God in the place of God’s choosing(Jerusalem) and in the manner of God’s intent(according to the instructions of the Torah). His ultimate purpose, however, is not to dwell on long ago. Rather he seeks to sketch the lines of Israel’s future as the people of God by drawing on the resources of Israel’s past. Books in the Westminster Bible Companion series assist laity in their study of the Bible as a guide to Christian faith and practice. In this first of a three-volume, comprehensive history, Gary Dorrien mixes theological analysis with historical and biographical detail to present the first comprehensive interpretation of American theological liberalism. Arguing that the indigenous roots of American liberal theology existed before the rise of Darwinism, Dorrien maintains that this tradition took shape in the nineteenth century and was motivated by a desire to map a progressive “third way” between American liberal theology by its openness to historical criticism and evolutionary theory; its commitment to the authority of individual reason and experience; its conception of Christianity as an ethical way of life; and its commitment to make Christianity credible and socially relevant to modern people.

How we read the Bible and what we “discover” there are inseparably linked. Scholarship’s focus on the historical setting has left the Bible “figured out.” By moving beyond modernity’s obsession with historical readings, Seitz seeks to recover a figural/typological approach to both Testaments-one that shapes a truly theological understanding of Scripture.

During the last decade the doctrine of the Trinity and the concept of koinonia have been much in evidence in ecumenical contexts. Collins looks beyond the growing ecumenical consensus to examine the origin for the basis for the consensus, and suggests that it is possible to root it in Western thought as well as in Eastern Orthodoxy.
